The exterior was inspired by Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, including the sinister gargoyles, and the interior after Saint Denis in France. Description: Dated September 1927, this photograph shows the Carneal House in Covington, Kentucky, with a caption that reads "Cinci. [Cincinnati] O, Sept. 1937 #130 405 E. Second St., Covington, KY." Thomas D. Carneal, founder of Covington, built the house in 1815 in an architectural style which reflects Italian architect Andrea Palladio. Standing on Second Street near the Licking and Ohio Rivers, the Carneal House is a site on Covington's Riverside Historic District. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows several horses racing towards the finish line at the Latonia Race Track in Covington, Kentucky (formerly know as Latonia). Horse #2 is roughly a length ahead of the next two closest horses as he gets ready to cross the finish line. A hand full of spectators stand in the infield and a few can also be seen along the bottom of the photograph. Many of the men wear light-colored shirts and boating hats. Ohio sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward designed this statue of Simon Kenton, an early Ohio settler who was known for his conflicts with American Indians, in the early 1860s. He had hoped an enlargement of this statue, to be placed in Columbus, Ohio, would be his first public monument. Due to the outbreak of the Civil War, however, the project was not approved. The statue measures 26" high (66.04 cm). Ward (1830-1910) was born in Urbana, Ohio. He moved to New York in 1849 to study under sculptor Henry Kirke Brown. In 1861 he established a studio and began working on pieces with distinctly American themes. The Indian Hunter was his first public work and one of several pieces placed in Central Park in New York. He also created statues of George Washington and James A. Garfield in Washington, D.C. Ward also created the pediment statues at the New York Stock Exchange, focusing on figures signifying American wealth and commerce. Simon Kenton (1755-1836) was born in Virginia and fled to avoid prosecution for a fight in which he believed that he killed his opponent. Using the name Simon Butler, he settled in Boonesboro, Kentucky. He served as a spy during Lord Dunmore's War and spent time in a British prison in Detroit. He joined General Anthony Wayne's offensive against the American Indians in Ohio in 1793 at fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. During the War of 1812 he commanded troops at the Battle of the Thames, in which the Americans were victorious over the British. Kenton died in Logan County, Ohio on April 29, 1836. Description: This photograph shows the memorial for Simon Kenton, in the Oak Dale Cemetery in Urbana. A large headstone for Happersett can be seen in the background. Simon Kenton (April 3, 1755 – April 29, 1836) was a famous United States frontiersman and friend of Daniel Boone, Simon Girty, Spencer Records and Isaac Shelby. He served as a scout during Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. He participated in a number of military engagements against the British and Indians during the American Revolution. In 1778, he joined George Rogers Clark on a successful expedition into the Illinois Country to attack British outposts as well as Indian settlements. That same year he accompanied Daniel Boone in an attack on the Shawnee Indians' settlement of Chillicothe near Oldtown, Ohio and returned to service under George Rogers Clark as a scout in 1779. In 1794 he served in the militia under General Anthony Wayne and fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1798, he moved to Ohio,having formerly lived in Kentucky, became a Brigadier General in the Ohio Militia in 1805 and participated in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, during the War of 1812. Oak Dale Cemetery is located at 319 Patrick Avenue in Urbana. The 60-acre grounds, begun in 1856, is still in use. It holds two mausoleums, a gazebo and several historical monuments. Description: This image shows the Simon Kenton Memorial in Urbana, Ohio. Simon Kenton (1755-1836) was a legendary frontiersman in Ohio and the Midwest. In 1774, he served as a scout during Lord Dunmore's War. By 1775, Kenton had moved to Boonesborough, Kentucky. For the next few years, he worked as a scout for the settlement, often coming in contact with the local Indians. During the American Revolution, Kenton participated in a number of military engagements against the British and Indians. In 1778, he joined George Rogers Clark on a difficult but successful expedition into the Illinois Country, to attack British outposts as well as Indian settlements. Kenton moved to the Zanesfield, Ohio, around 1820. During the last years of his life, Kenton lived in poverty because of land ownership disputes and mismanagement of his money.In 1836, Kenton died in Logan County near Zanesfield and was buried there. In 1865, his remains were moved to Urbana. The state of Ohio constructed a monument to mark his grave in 1884. View on Ohio Memory.
